The Department of Physics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FMIPA UGM), held a General Lecture entitled “Spin Current Measurements in Magnetic Thin Films” on Friday, August 21, 2026. The event was conducted in a hybrid format, taking place at Meeting Room 1, Department of Physics, FMIPA UGM, and via Zoom, and was open to the entire UGM academic community.
The General Lecture featured Prof. Yuya Ishikawa from the Research Center for Development of Far-Infrared Region, Fukui University, Japan, as the guest speaker. The event served as a platform for academic learning and knowledge exchange on recent developments in spintronics, particularly research concerning spin current measurements in magnetic thin films.
During the lecture, Prof. Yuya Ishikawa discussed various aspects related to spin current and the characteristics of thin-film magnetic materials. This topic represents an important area in the development of spintronics, a field that utilizes the spin properties of electrons in addition to their charge to advance next-generation electronic technologies and devices.
The lecture provided participants with an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of experimental methods and approaches in magnetic materials research. The discussion of spin current measurements also introduced participants to recent technological developments and research methods relevant to the fields of materials physics, magnetism, and spintronics.
In addition to the lecture session, the General Lecture provided an opportunity for academic interaction between the speaker and participants. Through discussion and question-and-answer sessions, participants were able to explore the research topic in greater depth while gaining broader perspectives on developments in international research.
The presence of Prof. Yuya Ishikawa also provided participants with an opportunity to gain insights into physics research in Japan, particularly in the areas of materials and spin-related phenomena. The exchange of knowledge through this event is expected to broaden students’ and researchers’ perspectives on research approaches employed by international institutions and encourage the development of new ideas for research at the Department of Physics, FMIPA UGM.
The event also formed part of the Department of Physics FMIPA UGM’s efforts to strengthen an academic culture that promotes scientific discussion, collaboration, and engagement with the international research community. Interaction between the UGM academic community and international researchers is expected to create opportunities for research collaboration, knowledge exchange, and human resource development, particularly in the fields of materials physics, magnetism, and spintronics.
The hybrid format of the event also enabled broader participation from members of the Department of Physics and the wider academic community. This format provided participants with the flexibility to attend either in person or online, while supporting the use of digital technology in academic learning and knowledge exchange.
Through the General Lecture “Spin Current Measurements in Magnetic Thin Films,” the Department of Physics, FMIPA UGM, continues to promote the advancement of students’ and academics’ knowledge of developments in modern physics research. The event is expected to stimulate greater interest in spintronics, magnetic materials, and materials physics, while creating opportunities for future research development and academic collaboration.
