The Department of Physics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FMIPA UGM), in collaboration with the Physics Graduate Student Association (HMPF), organized a Welcoming and Introduction to Academic Interest Groups (Kelompok Bidang Keahlian/KBK) for new graduate students in Physics at UGM in 2026. The event was held on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at Meeting Room 1, Department of Physics, FMIPA UGM.
The event served as a welcoming activity as well as an introduction to the academic environment for new students in the Master’s and Doctoral Programs in Physics. Through this activity, new students received information about the study programs, academic interest groups, research areas, laboratory facilities, as well as various academic and student activities that can support their study journey at the Department of Physics, FMIPA UGM.
The event began with an opening session, followed by the singing of the Indonesian National Anthem and the Gadjah Mada Hymn. The program continued with remarks and presentations from the Secretary of the Department of Physics, Dr.rer.nat. Ir. Herlan Darmawan, S.Si., M.Sc., the Head of the Doctoral Program in Physics, Prof. Dr. Eng. Rinto Anugraha NQZ, S.Si., M.Si., and the Head of the Master’s Program in Physics, Prof. Dr. Eng. Fahrudin Nugroho, S.Si., M.Si.
One of the main activities was the introduction to the Academic Interest Groups (KBK) within the Department of Physics. The new students received presentations on Applied Physics delivered by Prof. Drs. Gede Bayu Suparta, M.S., Ph.D., Theoretical and Computational Physics by Dr. Dwi Satya Palupi, S.Si., M.Si., Materials Physics by Dr. Muhamad Darwis Umar, S.Si., M.Si., and Geophysics by Dr. Permana, S.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D.
The introduction to the KBKs provided students with an overview of the scientific fields and research areas developed within the Department of Physics. This information is expected to help students identify their academic interests and potential research areas in line with their individual academic goals, while also creating opportunities for interaction and collaboration with faculty members and research groups.
In addition to the academic sessions, the event also featured an HPU socialization session delivered by Dr. Chotimah, M.Si., a group documentation session, and interactive activities. Following the break for prayer and lunch, the program continued with an introduction to the Physics Graduate Student Association (HMPF) UGM, a sharing session and discussion on the Study Plan (KRS), as well as a laboratory tour. These activities provided new students with an opportunity to become more familiar with student life and the research facilities available within the Department of Physics.
The enthusiasm of the new students was evident throughout the event. The various presentations and discussion sessions provided participants with opportunities to obtain information directly and interact with the department leadership, study program coordinators, faculty members, and graduate students. These interactions are expected to help new students adapt to the academic environment and build their academic networks from the beginning of their studies.
Through the Welcoming and Introduction to Academic Interest Groups for New Graduate Students in Physics at UGM 2026, the Department of Physics, FMIPA UGM, continues to foster an informative, collaborative, and supportive academic environment. The activity is expected to serve as an important first step for new students to understand the academic environment, explore research areas, build academic networks, and prepare for their study and research journey as graduate students in Physics at UGM.
