SD IT BIAS Yogyakarta Explores Science Phenomena: Exciting Learning at UGM Physics Lab

On August 21, 2024, the Basic Physics Laboratory and the Geophysics Laboratory at Gadjah Mada University (UGM), under the Department of Physics, once again welcomed students from SDIT BIAS Yogyakarta. The visit aimed to provide the students with an engaging introduction to science and the exciting phenomena within it.

Hundreds of sixth-grade students from SDIT BIAS Yogyakarta were divided into two large groups. In the thermodynamics room, the first group was introduced to various physics-related phenomena. Guided by Dr. Eko Sulistya, M.Si., and Idham Syah Alam, S.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D., the students enthusiastically followed the explanations and demonstrations of physics experiments, such as waves commonly found in everyday life.

Documentation of Activities in the Caloric Room and Mechanics Room with Dr. Eko Sulistya, M.Si., Dr.rer.nat. Ade Anggraeni, S.Si., M.Si. and Dr. Idham Syah Alam, M.Sc. explaining and doing exciting experiments in physics and geophysics.

In the mechanics room, the second group got a closer look at phenomena related to geophysics. The students listened attentively to Dr.rer.nat. Ade Anggraini, S.Si., M.Si., who discussed natural phenomena frequently occurring in Yogyakarta, such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The students were introduced to instruments used to detect seismic waves from seismic sources. Dr. Ade also explained the monitoring of active volcanoes, such as Mount Merapi, using demonstration tools. Idham Syah Alam, S.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D., also introduced physics experiments, such as resonance tubes and diffraction grating experiments.

In the next session, the two groups switched rooms to ensure everyone experienced the same exciting science learning at UGM Physics. This collaborative learning opportunity at the Basic Physics Laboratory and Geophysics Laboratory at UGM supports the 4th and 17th pillars of the Sustainable Development Goals, which focus on quality education and partnerships for achieving the goals.
