Two Days of Inspiration: The Department of Physics at UGM Welcomes New Students with Laboratory Exploration and Introduction to Areas of Expertise

In order to welcome new students of the Master’s and Doctoral programs for the 2024/2025 academic year, the Department of Physics, in collaboration with the Himpunan Mahasiswa Pascasarjana Fisika (HMPF) of UGM, held a welcoming event and an Introduction to the Group of Expertise within Physics at UGM. This event aimed not only to welcome the new students but also to provide an introduction to the Group of Expertise at the Department of Physics at UGM as a first step in understanding the academic journey they will embark upon.

This event, which was held offline over two days, is different from previous years, reflecting UGM’s commitment to creating a conducive and inclusive learning environment. This aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number 4, “Quality Education,” which emphasizes inclusive and quality higher education access for all.

On the first day, Thursday, August 8, 2024, the event took place in the Meeting Room 1 of the Department of Physics at UGM. The event began with welcoming remarks and presentations of the Doctoral and Master’s programs’ curricula by the head and secretary of the program. In this session, students were given a comprehensive overview of the study programs, including academic information, study plans, research opportunities, and available facilities to support their academic development. This reflects UGM’s efforts to ensure that every student has access to the information and resources they need to succeed in their education.

Subsequently, the event continued with the introduction of the Group of Expertise (KBK) at the Department of Physics at UGM by each coordinator. Each KBK coordinator presented the research fields that have been conducted or are currently being conducted, collaborative projects, career opportunities, and courses related to the KBK. This initiative not only helps students choose an academic path that suits their interests but also emphasizes the importance of collaboration and innovation in the field of science, contributing to SDG number 9, “Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure.”

On the second day, Friday, August 9, 2024, new students were invited to tour the laboratories in the Physics Building at UGM. This lab tour was conducted to allow new students to see firsthand the facilities and equipment available in the laboratories, helping them understand the tools they can use during their studies and research. Additionally, students can observe the various research fields being conducted in the laboratories, which can assist them in choosing a research topic or field that aligns with their interests and academic goals.

The laboratories visited by the new students include the Material Physics and Instrumentation Laboratory (3rd Floor), Geophysics Laboratory (3rd Floor), Atomic and Nuclear Physics Laboratory (2nd Floor), Image Processing Laboratory (3rd Floor), and Laser and Acoustics Laboratory (1st Floor). This activity not only serves as an introduction to the facilities but also as a means to build the practical competencies of the students, supporting SDG number 8, “Decent Work and Economic Growth,” by providing skill-oriented and research-based education.

With this event, new students are expected to gain a deeper understanding of the study program and the research fields they will pursue during their time at the Department of Physics at UGM. This step is in line with UGM’s vision to produce competent and globally competitive graduates, supporting sustainable development goals by providing quality, inclusive, and sustainable education.
