All Study Programs in the Department of Physics Internationally Accredited by ASIIN

Four study programs in the Department of Physics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), namely the Bachelor’s Program in Physics, Bachelor’s Program in Geophysics, Master’s Program in Physics, and Doctoral Program in Physics, have successfully obtained international accreditation from ASIIN (Akkreditierungsagentur für Studiengänge der Ingenieurwissenschaften, der Informatik, der Naturwissenschaften und der Mathematik), a German-based accreditation agency specializing in evaluating study programs in engineering, informatics, natural sciences, and mathematics.

During the ASIIN accreditation visitation at the Department of Physics UGM, the evaluation team, consisting of Prof. Dr. Gert-Ludwig Ingold, Prof. Dr. Ethem Buelent Tezkan, Herri Trilaksana, Ph.D., Langgam Bagas Pratomo, Muhammad Taufigi, and Dr. Natalia Vega, conducted evaluations and verifications of the ASIIN documents previously submitted. The visitation took place on March 5-6, 2024. During the visitation, the ASIIN accreditation team met and discussed with students, faculty members, alumni, curriculum teams, program, and department management, as well as faculty and university leadership. This was done to conduct a comprehensive assessment of various aspects of each study program and provide feedback that is expected to enhance the quality of these four programs.

The ASIIN evaluation team, consisting of experts such as Prof. Dr. Gert-Ludwig Ingold, Prof. Dr. Ethem Buelent Tezkan, Herri Trilaksana, Ph.D., Langgam Bagaspratomo, Muhammad Taufigi, and Dr. Natalia Vega, conducted a visitation at the Department of Physics UGM on March 5-6, 2024. During the visitation, the team conducted evaluations and verifications of the documents that had been prepared beforehand and held discussions with various parties including students, faculty members, alumni, program, department, faculty, and university management. The purpose of this visitation was to conduct a comprehensive assessment of each study program and provide recommendations for further development.

The Head of the Department of Physics UGM, Prof. Dr. Eng. Edi Suharyadi, stated that this achievement is the result of continuous efforts to improve the quality of the study programs. “Accreditation is part of the assessment and evaluation process in the framework of continuous and ongoing improvement to enhance the advancement of the study programs. Both national and international accreditation will provide opportunities and platforms for us to make improvements in various aspects comprehensively, so that the study programs in the Department of Physics not only excel at the national level but can also compete globally,” he said.

Prof. Edi expressed his gratitude and appreciation to the university leadership, the dean and vice dean, the program management, and the academic and administrative staff within the Department of Physics UGM who have prepared everything related to the assessment and visitation by the ASIIN accreditation agency. One of the strategies implemented by the Department of Physics to ensure the quality of education is by consistently monitoring quality, including evaluating input-process-output, and, of course, the educational outcomes of the study programs.

With the achievement of ASIIN accreditation, graduates from the four study programs in the Department of Physics UGM now have a competitive advantage in the global community. They are recognized as having competencies that meet international standards, which opens up broader career opportunities in various sectors, both domestically and internationally.

Efforts to improve the quality of education, both at the national and international levels, are carried out through accreditation that ensures high and globally competitive higher education standards. This aligns with SDG 4: Quality Education. International accreditation from ASIIN demonstrates the improvement of educational infrastructure and innovation in teaching and learning processes, supporting the development of industry and science. This aligns with SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure. The collaboration between Universitas Gadjah Mada and the international accreditation agency ASIIN reflects a global partnership to achieve better quality education and international recognition, which aligns with SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.

Information regarding the national and international accreditation status of the four study programs can be accessed on the accreditation certificate page, while the international accreditation status of all study programs at UGM can be found on the KJM UGM page.
