On Wednesday, February 21, 2024, the Basic Physics Laboratory received a visit from Da’ar El Salam High School Bogor. The purpose of this visit was to acquire academic information and introduce laboratory physics practical activities to the students. The delegation from Da’ar El Salam High School consisted of 40 individuals, including 30 students and 10 teachers.
The students and teachers were warmly welcomed by Dr. Eko Sulistya, M.Si., the Head of the Basic Physics Laboratory. He provided insights into the structure of educators and laboratory-managing lecturers in the Physics Department, introduced various practical rooms along with their experiments, and explained the equipment used in Basic Physics experiments. Dr. Eko also demonstrated several practical tools, including the Newton’s ring.

The students were also introduced to one example of research innovation developed in the Basic Physics Laboratory. This innovation involves a tool that is an implementation of the Internet of Things (IoT) combined with Arduino to remotely control devices connected to the IoT system. The control of these devices can be done through an Android device equipped with the “Remote XY” application, which can be freely downloaded from the Play Store.

Mrs. Dita, one of the accompanying teachers from Da’ar El Salam High School, expressed that through this visit, she hopes to enhance the students’ knowledge. She mentioned that the UGM Basic Physics Laboratory is spacious and comfortable, providing an opportunity for students to try new tools, which may be limited in their school’s practical displays. “The hope is that the students can explore themselves, whether at home or at school,” she said. After visiting the Basic Physics Laboratory, the students and teachers also proceeded to visit the Chemistry Laboratory, which is still within the FMIPA UGM area.
The visit to the Basic Physics Laboratory at the Department of Physics, UGM, is an initiative supporting the achievement of the 4th and 17th Sustainable Development Goals pillars related to quality education and partnerships to attain these goals. The students directly benefit from the learning experiences and equipment demonstrations introduced during this visit. As a result, students can enhance their understanding and skills in the fields of physics and chemistry. Conversely, schools are given the opportunity to establish partnerships that can boost students’ motivation in completing their education.
