UGM Department of Physics Earns Three Awards at the 2025 Insan UGM Berprestasi Ceremony

Yogyakarta — The Department of Physics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada, has once again achieved remarkable recognition through the attainment of three awards at the Insan UGM Berprestasi 2025 ceremony. These awards reflect the university’s appreciation for members of its academic community and partners who have demonstrated exceptional dedication in innovation, scientific publication, and the utilization as well as downstream implementation of UGM’s research outputs.

One of this year’s recognitions was awarded to Prof. Dr. Eng. Kuwat Triyana, M.Si., who received the category of “Innovation with the Highest Cumulative Royalties.” His innovation, the Electronic Nose Unit Equipped with a Dehumidifier for Liquid Sample Analysis, led to the development of the widely known product GeNose C19. The innovation gained national prominence for its significant role during the pandemic, offering rapid and accessible detection capabilities. This award highlights Prof. Kuwat’s consistent commitment to producing research that not only excels academically but also delivers tangible benefits to the broader public.

Another prestigious award was conferred upon Dr. Eng. Ahmad Kusumaatmaja, S.Si., M.Sc., who won the category of “Best Publication on the Theme of Independence in Raw Materials for Medicine and Medical Devices 2025.” His research, titled “Novel anti-bacterial polyvinyl acetate/chitosan nanofibers to accelerate wound healing,” was published in the reputable international journal Materials Letters (Elsevier B.V.). This study contributes significantly to the development of antibacterial health materials with promising applications in wound-healing technology, supporting national efforts to establish greater independence in medical raw materials.

The department also celebrated recognition earned by its industry partner, PT Fumalife Sinergi Inovasi, which was honored with the award for “Startup with the Highest Adoption of Intellectual Property.” Fumalife has actively adopted multiple patents derived from UGM’s research—particularly in the fields of environment and health—and successfully translated them into impactful products and services for society. This award underscores the success of UGM’s research commercialization efforts through sustained collaboration between academia and industry.

Together, these awards reaffirm the Department of Physics UGM’s commitment to producing high-quality research, advancing scientific innovation, and strengthening the public impact of its scientific contributions. The achievements of the award recipients demonstrate the strategic role of physics in addressing societal challenges, from healthcare and sensor technology to environmental solutions.

The Department of Physics expresses its deepest appreciation to all awardees. Their accomplishments serve as an inspiration for students, researchers, and the wider academic community to continue excelling, innovating, and enhancing UGM’s contributions at both national and global levels.
