DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dr. Agung Budiyono\, Pati – Jawa Tengah\, Imdonesia. \nTalk summary:\nWhat is quantum mechanics trying to tell us about the nature of reality\, and why it has the form it does? What fundamentally distinguishes quantum randomness and classical randomness? Can a particle be in two\, three\, or many places at the same time\, or traverse multiple paths simultaneously? Do we have many universes? Is the wave function physically real (as electromagnetic field)\, but living in infinite dimensional space (Bohmian interpretation) rather than in ordinary three dimensional space? Is there really spooky action-at-a-distance (as Einstein put it)? Is microscopic world fundamentally stochastic – that an electron may behave\, to an extent\, somehow freely? Or\, is quantum mechanics merely a tool of calculations\, which happens to fit the experimental data with spectacular accuracy? \nIt is remarkable that after 80 years since its invention\, physicists and philosophers have not yet arrived at a consensus to the above basic questions. One of the reasons is that the axioms of quantum mechanics are presented in a very abstract mathematical languages with obscure physical meaning: physical quantity is represented by a Hermitian operators which act on a Hilbert space\, etc. In the talk\, I will argue that quantum mechanics is a modified version of (everyday\, conventional) classical statistical mechanics. Quantum mechanics and classical statistical mechanics are derived within a common framework. Relative to the classical statistical mechanics\, quantum mechanics is distinguished via a physical (ontic) extension\, introducing a global-nonseparable variable generating physical correlation\, and a statistical (epistemic) restriction\, constraining the allowed phase space distribution that Nature allows us to prepare. \nThe new phase space model for quantum mechanics may offer novel (hopefully more powerful) tool to study quantum optics\, quantum transport\, and cold atoms. We expect that the (realist) model could provide fresh insight and better intuition to study the physical mechanisms and resources underlying the power and complexity of quantum information protocols (quantum computers\, quantum communications\, quantum cryptography\, etc) relative to their classical counterparts. Moreover\, the axiomatic framework\, based on transparent physical axioms\, may suggest a natural and consistent possible extensions of quantum mechanics. \nThe talk will be based on our recent paper: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-017-01375-w \n
